April 2009 at the Rainbow Wildlife Rescue

The Rainbow Wildlife Rescue is a non-profit organization in Stephenville, Texas. My name is Birgit Sommer. I am a licensed Wildlife Rehabilitator for the State of Texas as well as a volunteer and foster parent for the Erath County Humane Society.

I, like many other licensed wildlife rehabilitators, work out of my own home and volunteer my time and just about every spare cent I can gather towards my animal rescue efforts.

No local or state funding is available for animal caging, veterinary care, medicine or food. That's why most rehabilitators gratefully accept donations towards the care of animals they receive from the public.

Here are a few items we could use right now: KMR (Kitten Milk Replacer), Purina Kitten Chow, hanging bird and squirrel feeders and houses, hanging bowls and water bottles, 6ft tall privacy fence panels, small bird cages and large ferret-type cages with multiple stories.

68 critters came through the Rainbow Wildlife Rescue since the beginning of March. 39 have been released back to the wild or transferred to other rescues, 18 are still in my care, and 11 unfortunately didn't make it.

I would like to welcome our new subscribers! With 480 members we are approaching the 500 mark! Thank you all so much for taking the interest in my work with animals! Kitten

Stephenville, Texas: Local Issues

Vote for Mark Murphy

If you live in Stephenville, we urge you to support and vote for Mark Murphy on May 9th. Mr. Murphy has been of great help to the animal community. He actively supports the creation of a dog park in Stephenville, and, if re-elected, wants to speak out for a new animal shelter as well.
Thumbs up
Sean Perry has started a web site called Stephenvilledogpark.com. He also created the above graphic. Thanks! His web site features an exclusively local petition in favor of the dog park. Please click HERE to sign it!

Boy Scouts building a Flight Cage

Boy Scouts

Boy Scouts

The Boy Scouts started to construct a 16 x 8 x 8 foot flight cage 6 weeks ago. Unfortunately it is still not finished. I'm in the dark as to when they plan to return to complete it, but I hope it's going to be before the first birds show up, which should be any day now.

This also puts my federal permit application on hold, because that cage will not pass a State inspection yet.

But it has been of use already for a few rabbits, a momma dog with her puppies, and a pair of black vulture chicks.

Beaver Kit

Beaver Baby

This beaver was taken to the rescue by a caring landscaper that had to take down a dam. The beaver mom came back for the other babies, but not this one. Unable to leave it alone in the mud, the landscapers decided to safe this baby. He is now at the Furry Friendz Rescue in Dallas with other baby beavers.
Raccoon Baby

3 Raccoon Babies

3 orphaned raccoon babies with their eyes still closed. They opened their eyes last weekend and are very ferocious when it comes to their bottle.
Frosty and Flurry

Kitten

Frosty and Flurry, R.I.P. Daniel is now in foster care with his siblings.
13 Opossums in a squirrel house

Infant Opossum

How many opossums fit in a squirrel house? 13 of course! Opossum baby opening her eyes. This little girl is about 60 days old.
Vutlure Babies

Cottontail Rabbit

Black Vulture Chicks, now with Markeyta Dewey, a raptor rehabilitator. One of the many cottontails I had this year. Unfortunately only 2 survived, including this one.

Erath County Humane Society Animal Shelter

I want to mention the ECHS, since they have a current Adoption List on petfinder.com. I go to the shelter at least once a week and take pictures to update the petfinder page. It has been a great success!

Don't Buy, Adopt a Pet

Don't Buy, Adopt a Pet!

Whether you adopt a pet from a local animal shelter or a rescue organization, humane society, you're saving animal lives. You probably want to adopt just one kitten or cat, right? Adoption saves more than just the life of the pet you adopt.

If you adopt from an animal shelter, you're making room for another dog or cat, or you're allowing other dogs or cats at the shelter to be kept for a longer period of time, giving them a better chance at being adopted.

If you adopt from a humane society or a rescue organization, you're allowing that organization to rescue another dog or cat for adoption at a public shelter, which, of course, saves the life of that little guy plus the lives of others at that shelter by creating space so new pets can be kept longer. As you can see, adoption is truly a continuous cycle of saving lives and it's the right thing to do!
